[Review] Edmonton, AB - Sugar bowl

10922 88th Avenue, Edmonton, AB T6G 0Z1

Brunch is essentially a cult for hipsters and early morning joggers. No, I'm not talking about Denny's. Cora's doesn't count in my book either. Brunch is the start of your day, the meal that should tie you over for the next few hours of work. Brunch can also have the magical ability of curing your hangover if needed.

After working brunch for a year and a half, I noticed this trend of clientele, but I was still willing to join the band-wagon. Who can turn down the luscious running yolk of an egg or the deep fried potatoes that you get on the side? Or when it comes to ethnic brunches, those are so fun to explore. I've tried Egyptian brunch with falafel and beans. I'm sure most people have also tried Chinese brunch - also known as dim sum. The latter is more conducive to over-ordering, but that's just because there are so many different dishes and the concept of sharing makes it seem like you're eating a lot less than you think!

So hearing so much about this place "Sugar bowl" and how delicious their chicken and waffle dish is, I decided to give it a try. Any restaurant that gets multiple positive reviews and is close to home always deserves a chance!

FEATURE HASH:

  • Rating: 2.5/5 starfishes

  • Price: $13

  • Potatoes, chicken sausage, onions, bell peppers, two poached eggs and house made ketchup

  • Ketchup was very runny and not as sweet as traditional "Heinz"

  • Chicken sausage did not have much flavour and could have used even a bit more salt

CHICKEN AND WAFFLE:

  • Rating: 3.5/5 starfishes

  • Price: $14

  • Belgian buttermilk waffle, spiced chicken breast, tomato salad and maple butter

  • Waffles were sweet and fluffy

  • Very generous portion of chicken in the dish and also easy to eat because it was boneless

  • Nice crispiness to the chicken, but the waffle was a lot softer than expected

At the end of our brunch, I couldn't help but feel dissatisfied. I enjoyed catching up with my friend, but I did not think that it was worth losing my sleep for. I usually don't get up for 8 am brunch on the weekend, and I certainly would not make this place an exception. I wouldn't completely disregard it yet since they do have a lunch and dinner menu, which I did not have the chance to try. My friend also recommended the cinnamon bun, so I think I will go back to try that the next time - eating that much sugar when my body was barely awake did not sound like a good idea to me. Until next time.... I wlll come back for you cinnamon bun.
