[Review] Edmonton, AB - Prairie Noodle Shop

10350 124 St, NW, Edmonton, AB, T5N 3V9

Edmonton has a contestant in the Gold Metal Plate challenge? He won bronze within Canada's national ranking? Well then we definitely couldn't skip out on his ramen restaurant in

Edmonton! For those who don't know what the Gold Metal Plate is, it is an annual cooking competition with some of the top chefs in Canada and the competition helps raise money for the Canadian Olympic Foundation. But back to the important part, since both B and I love ramen, we decided to bring date night to Prairie Noodle Shop!

We both came with hungry stomachs and ordered a couple of things to try! We each had our own bowl of ramen and we shared two bao'wiches!

BAO’WICH:

  • Rating (pork belly): 3.5/5 starfishes

  • Rating (pulled pork shoulder): 4/5 starfishes

  • Price: $7.80 each

  • Pork belly or pulled pork shoulder with lettuce, cheese, pickled shallots and "Pnoosh "Sauce

  • Served on two slices of asian styled steam buns

  • Buns were very nice and aerated, not too starchy

  • The pork shoulder was a bit more dry for me so I had a preference for the pork belly one, with all its fatty goodness

  • The sauce tasted a bit similar to a big mac sauce, which is what I love!

CHICKEN NOUKOU:

  • Rating: 3.5/5 starfishes

  • Price: $19

  • Shoyu broth with sesame grilled chicken thigh, pulled chicken breast with a sous-vide egg and pickled daikon

  • The pickled daikon made the dish a bit more sour

  • I added some roasted corn and green onions to my ramen

  • Not too salty for a shoyu broth, but you couldn't taste much of the chicken flavour in the broth either.

  • I like how they made the egg poached instead of soft-boiled. The egg white had an interesting fairly chewy texture to it. It wasn't chewy like taffy, but it did not break off like a normal boiled egg white would.

  • Sesame chicken thighs and breast were very delicious and they gave you a generous portion of it!

Overall, I was fairly pleased with the service and the quality of the food. The portions were also very generous, but it is definitely not your typical ramen bowl. The pricing is a little higher in comparison to other ramen places, but I understand that they use fresh and local items to make their dishes. For those looking for traditional ramen, I would not recommend this to you. For those looking for something more similar to ramen fusion, I would say give this to try because I might come back to try a different bowl and the miso potatoes! If you come, get the pork belly bao'wich because those are a hot item that cannot be missed!
